Namdaemun Market Opening Hours: The Market's Own List Has 38 Timetables, and Some Floors Open at 11 p.m.

Search for Namdaemun Market opening hours and you will often find a single answer, something like 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The market's own merchants' association publishes a list with 38 different timetables on it.

Some of those floors open before midnight and close the next afternoon. Others shut at two on Saturday. None of them list Sunday hours at all.

Once you know which building sells what, and which clock that building runs on, the place stops being a maze you arrive at too late.

It is about ten thousand shops, and they do not share a clock

The first thing to understand is the size. The merchants' association describes roughly 10,172 shops, around 50,000 people working there, and about 300,000 visitors a day, of whom about 10,000 are from abroad.

It also sells both wholesale and retail. Shop owners from all over Korea buy here to restock their own stores, and that single fact explains most of the strange hours.

Because the market is really dozens of separate buildings and arcades, each one sets its own hours. The association's own information page says it plainly: the hours differ from building to building.

Here is a simplified version of the official list, grouped by what is sold.

Where the official table gives a single time across both columns, the building keeps the same hours on Saturday. The two groups that change on Saturday are the ones people come for most: children's clothing drops its night session, and most accessory arcades close at 14:00.

If the whole market looks like this, why do so many floors open in the middle of the night?

The night shift is for shop owners, not tourists

Look again at the children's clothing buildings. They run two sessions on weekdays, one in the daytime and one from 22:30 to 05:00. A few women's clothing arcades open at 23:00 and keep going until the next afternoon.

Visit Korea, the national tourism organisation, describes the same pattern from the other side: the market is open overnight to serve retailers coming from all over the country.

So if you arrive at midnight and find a building busy, that is the wholesale trade doing its job. It is not a night market set up for visitors, and most of the buildings a visitor comes for keep daytime hours.

The flower wholesale building is the most extreme case. It opens at three in the morning, which tells you who it is really for.

Gwangjang Market opening hours have the same problem on a smaller scale, with three sections on three clocks, so if you are planning both markets in one trip, check them building by building rather than as one "market hours" line.

So when is the safest time to go?

Sunday is the day that catches people

Visit Korea lists the market's closed day as Sunday, and the merchants' association table gives weekday and Saturday hours only. There is no Sunday column to read.

Saturday is its own trap. Many accessory arcades on the official list close at 14:00 on Saturdays, about three hours earlier than on weekdays. If you are coming for jewellery or hair accessories, a Saturday afternoon visit may find most of those shutters down.

The market's tourist information centre is on the third floor of the Dongwoo Building, in the alley by Gate 2 next to IBK bank. It is open 10:00 to 19:00 and closes only on the day of Seollal and the day of Chuseok.

This year Chuseok falls on Friday 25 September, inside a holiday that runs from Thursday 24 to Saturday 26. If your trip lands in that window, the Chuseok 2026 dates and what closes around them are worth checking before you plan a market day.

If I were taking a friend who only had one shot at it, I would pick a weekday between late morning and mid afternoon. That is the only window where almost every row on the official list overlaps.

What the market itself tells you to eat, and how to get there

The association's own introduction names the food it is proud of, and it is not a generic street food list. It mentions long-running oxtail soup restaurants, the braised hairtail fish alley, the knife-cut noodle alley, vegetable hotteok, chicken soup, and a North Korean style naengmyeon restaurant.

Those sit in the main market lanes, which is also the part with the widest hours on the official list, from 06:00 to 23:00 with each shop setting its own time.

Getting there is simple. Take Line 4 to Hoehyeon Station, which is also signed Namdaemun Market, and use Exit 5, 6 or 7. The association puts the walk at about five minutes. If you are arriving by KTX, it lists about five minutes on foot from Seoul Station to the Namdaemun gate.

The short version

Namdaemun Market is about ten thousand shops across dozens of buildings, and each building keeps its own hours. Weekday daytime is the only window where nearly all of them are open, Saturday afternoons are thin for accessories, and Sunday is listed as closed.

The night hours you see online are real, but they belong to the wholesale trade. Go in the daytime, eat in the main lanes, and when it comes to opening hours, check the building before you check the clock.
