There's a Korean word for what my friends were looking for.
Hi, I'm Narae.
Every time a friend from abroad landed in Seoul, they asked me the same thing: “Not the tourist stuff — where do Koreans actually go?”
I got it, because I ask it too. When I travel, I don't want the landmark. I want the place the people who live there love.
Then I realized what my friends were asking for already has a name here. 정 — jeong. It doesn't translate cleanly. It's the warmth that builds between people, and between people and the places they keep going back to. Nobody explains it to you. You just feel it — usually in a small restaurant, usually from someone who had no reason to be kind to you.
So I started writing it down. That's Jeong, Korea.
