Daiso in Korea: What Koreans Actually Put in the Basket

Narae — the Korean friend you'd text before flying to Seoul
Narae·Korean, travels often — the friend everyone texts before flying to Seoul

Most visitors walk into a Daiso Korea store looking for souvenirs. Face masks to take home, a phone charm, a set of chopsticks in a gift box.

Koreans walk into the same shop for a bin liner and a bathroom drain filter.

That difference is the whole article. This is not a gift shop that Koreans happen to use. It is the shop a Korean household runs on, and the interesting part is what that tells you about how people here actually live.

It Stopped Being Japanese in December 2023

Almost everyone assumes this is the Japanese Daiso with a Korean sign on it. That was true for twenty-two years and it is not true now.

In December 2023, Asung HMP, the majority owner of the Korean company, bought out the entire 34.21% stake held by Japan's Daiso Sangyo for ₩500 billion. Asung HMP's holding went to 84.23%, with the founder's two daughters holding the rest. The joint venture is over.

This matters for what ends up on the shelf. The buying is done in Korea for Korean homes, which is why the storage section is built around apartment kitchens and the seasonal aisle turns over with the Korean calendar rather than the Japanese one.

Six Prices, and Only Six

Every item in the store is one of six prices. There is no other price.

2₩1,000
3₩1,500
4₩2,000
5₩3,000added 2004
6₩5,000added 2006, still the ceiling

The store opened with four tiers. ₩3,000 arrived in 2004 and ₩5,000 in 2006, and the ceiling has not moved since. Two decades of inflation have gone past it without shifting the top number.

More than half of everything in the store is ₩1,000 or less. More than eighty per cent is ₩2,000 or less. So when you look at a shelf and cannot see a price tag, the honest guess is ₩1,000, and you will be right most of the time.

The six price tiers. Bar length is the price itself.

Practically, this changes how you shop. You do not compare prices, because there is nothing to compare. You decide whether the object is worth ₩2,000 to you, and that question takes about a second.

The Tourist Basket and the Korean Basket

Here is the split as I see it, standing in the same aisle as everybody else.

What visitors reach forWhat the household actually needs it for
Sheet masks and skincare minisGenuinely good value, and the one overlap where both baskets agree
Character stationeryBought by students, not by adults
Chopstick and spoon gift setsKoreans buy the plain ones, singly, to replace a lost pair
Ceramic mugsBought for an office desk, not a home
Kitchen storage containers, sized for a Korean fridge
Bathroom consumables: drain hair catchers, shower filters
Cleaning cloths and rubber gloves, bought by the fistful
Cable ties, hooks, and anything that solves a small apartment problem

The bottom half of that table is the reason the chain exists. If you want the trip to feel like a local one rather than a duty-free run, spend ten minutes in the storage and bathroom aisles. They are quietly the most informative shelves in Korea about how small apartments here are and how carefully people organise them.

What visitors reach for, and what the shop is actually for.

Where the ₩5,000 Ceiling Bites

A price cap is a promise and a limit at once.

The limit shows up in anything with a motor, a battery of any size, or a coating that has to survive heat. Kitchen knives, non-stick pans, anything electrical. These exist and they cost ₩5,000, and they perform like objects that cost ₩5,000.

The promise shows up in anything simple and disposable. Containers, hooks, brushes, bags, ties, sponges. There is no meaningful quality gap between a ₩1,000 version and a ₩6,000 version of a plastic hook, so the ₩1,000 one wins.

The rule I would give a friend: if the object has moving parts or touches direct heat, buy it somewhere else. Everything else, buy it here.

One rule: moving parts or direct heat, buy elsewhere.

Tax Refund: Do Not Count On It

Korea's tax refund scheme returns part of the VAT on purchases of ₩15,000 or more in a single transaction, usually five to eight per cent, for visitors staying under six months.

Whether a given Daiso Korea branch participates varies by branch. Large stores in tourist districts often do. Neighbourhood branches often do not, and there is no way to tell from outside.

If it matters to you, ask at the till before you queue, or look for the Tax Free sticker on the door. Given that a full basket here often lands under ₩15,000 anyway, I would not build a shopping plan around it.

Which Branch to Walk Into

There are more than 1,600 branches nationwide, which means you are rarely more than a few minutes from one.

They are not interchangeable. The chain has spent recent years enlarging stores rather than only multiplying them, and its ten largest branches are all over 2,300 square metres. A large branch carries the full storage, kitchen, and seasonal ranges. A small neighbourhood branch may carry a third of that and skew heavily to consumables.

If you have one Daiso Korea visit in you, spend it on a large branch. If you pass a small one and it does not have what you wanted, that is not the chain being out of stock. It is a different shop.

A large branch and a neighbourhood branch are not the same shop.

What It Says About Korea

The chain took ₩4.54 trillion in revenue in 2025 with a ceiling of ₩5,000 per item. That number is not a retail curiosity. It is a country where a very large share of daily objects are treated as replaceable and cheap on purpose, in homes that are small enough that storing a spare of anything is a real cost.

Walk the aisles with that in mind and the shop reads differently. The bathroom shelf is sized for a bathroom you can touch both walls of. The kitchen containers are sized for a fridge built into a wall. It is the most legible thing in Korea about ordinary domestic life, and it costs nothing to look.

The range is sized to the homes it serves.

FAQ

Is Daiso Korea the same company as Japanese Daiso?

Not since December 2023. Asung HMP bought Daiso Sangyo's 34.21% stake for ₩500 billion, ending a twenty-two-year joint venture. The Korean business is now Korean-owned.

What is the most expensive thing I can buy there?

₩5,000. That has been the ceiling since 2006 and it applies to every item in the store.

Can I get a tax refund at Daiso Korea?

It depends on the branch. The national scheme requires a single transaction of ₩15,000 or more and returns roughly five to eight per cent, but not every branch is registered. Ask before you queue.

Is the skincare worth buying?

It is the one category where the visitor basket and the local basket genuinely agree, and it is the category most likely to survive a flight home intact.

How many stores are there?

More than 1,600 across the country, and the largest ten are each over 2,300 square metres.

Prices, tiers and figures are as reported in Korean business press through 2026. Store participation in tax refund schemes changes, so confirm at the branch.
